Split Festival

This year Sunderland welcomed Dizzee Rascal, Maxïmo Park, The Cribs and more to Mowbray Park for Split Festival.

This was my first ever Split Festival and I was very excited. I only attend the Sunday event and stayed at the main stage all day but I was so glad to be there!

I arrived just in time for The Generals, they opened the main stage, getting everyone pumped up and excited for the night ahead! Making us all forget about the heavy rain we were stood in, they interacted well with the crowd and played a set list full of great rock tunes.

Following The Generals, were a band called Lilliput, when they first walked on stage, one thing that came to my head was 'Mumford and Sons' as they share quite a similar style. Their set was really great and the range of instruments they played really added to the uniqueness of this band. They ended with their song 'Little Wanderer' which I really enjoyed as although it started off slowly, it picked up the tempo halfway through, which I thought was a really great feature of this song.

After another quick turn around of equipment on stage it was time for Boy Jumps Ship, with their high energy filled set. With a number of songs on their set list from their EP 'Lovers & Fighters' they wowed the crowd with their guitar riffs and great drum beats.

Frankie & The Heartstrings were the next act to grace the stage on Sunday afternoon! Locals to Mowbray Park, as their Record Shop 'Pop Recs. Ltd.' is located on Fawcett Street, they really brought so much energy to the festival! With a great upbeat set which included songs from both of their album's; Hunger (which was released in 2011) and The Days Run Away (released in 2013), they really were one of the best acts of the day!

Following a fantastic performance from Frankie & The Heartstrings, The Cribs were up next! The crowd went wild when these guys performed, with some people starting mosh pits while others crowd surfed, the atmosphere was amazing! With a set list filled with Indie/Punk Rock songs they definitely gave a memorable performance!

The end of The Cribs' set meant only one thing... it was time for Maxïmo Park! Their 17 song setlist was filled with songs from all of their albums including 'Going Missing' and 'Limassol' from 'A Certain Trigger' as well as 'Midnight On A Hill',  'Lydia, The Ink Will Never Dry' and 'Give, Get, Take' (which was the song they opened with), from their most recent album 'Too Much Information'   Lead singer, Paul Smith, performed with so much energy and really knew how to keep a crowd entertained! Finishing on a high with 'Apply Some Pressure' and 'Girls Who Play Guitars', Maxïmo Park left the stage with the audience in awe of their flawless performance! In my opinion they are one of the best live acts I have ever seen.

Overall, my first ever Split Festival was definitely a good one. Hopefully it will return next year with another great line up of local bands and artists!
